Who is Dylon Graves?
I believe a persons character can help determine how a person will operate in a position of power so here's a bit about me. I'll be 31 by election day and lived 30 of those years here in Windsor. When I'm not working you can find me in the wild playing Magic The Gathering, riding my motorcycle eating pizza from whichever shop I happen to be by (they're all good. It's friggin windsor, we invented good pizza), and sometimes at the shooting range shooting down the range. Without shame or guilt I live with my mother who has MS, her wife who is gay, as well as our 3 dogs who are dogs.
People over oligarchs profits
I will always stand with the people /workers/ renters over the profits of corporations/ capital owners/rent seekers. It's you that works the counter serving food, it's you that works the production line building products, it's you that pays for your landlords lifestyle. As part of my service as Mayor, I will be limiting my $180,000+ annual salary down to $50,000, with the remaining $130,000 to be spent on those who need it most, and while about 350 dollars a day doesn't sound like much compared to what we already spend on keeping the homeless in the street, it's something that can be directed at a problem and not just allocated for a program. It means meals, clothing, hygiene products, food, whatever the need is for those abandoned by society. It means a real impact on a persons life. Modern politics has bred a culture of using public office for self enrichment beyond your tax funded salary. It's more about mingling with the donor class to secure your post politics future than it is about serving the everyday people who put them in that position. If you're doing a good job as a politician you shouldn't have to rely on raising money for your next campaign or securing a high paying cushy job. I intend to remain a normal person of modest salary because to truly represent the people you have to be one of them. You have to feel economic impacts in a meaningful way to know what the people need to succeed through hard times.
The last election, of the 160,000 eligible voters, only 50,000 came out and 26,000 voted Dilkens. Before that of 150,000 voters 52,000 came out and 31,000 voted Dilkens. 2014 when Dilkens first became mayor there were 156,000 eligible voters, 59,000 voters came out and 32,000 voted Dilkens. Every year fewer and fewer people come out to vote and fewer vote for Dilkens every year. If these trends continue the only people voting in future elections will be the retired, home and business owners, and workers in certain industries. Almost half the people under 35 in canada don't vote despite making up 1 in 4 people. Apathy is how we end up in a place where nobody is happy with their leaders despite leaders being chosen by the people.
