Climate change is here
Extreme weather events are now more common and more intense. Summer lasts longer, winter is shorter, but we're still living like it's a debate. To protect families, homes and pets we need to prioritize flood prone residential areas for sewer upgrades, both with updating sewage for modern intake needs but also incentivising more home home/land owners to floodproof their homes. It's time to get ahead of the curve instead of just cleaning up after it.
Hotter summers means more A/C
To supplement the grid and your bills, we should be installing solar panels ar the very least over parking lots and unused wide open areas. I'm in favor of panels on residential and commercial buildings, schools and more, but only where deemed safe by the authority on solar panel, engineering and fire safety say so. Our electricity almost exclusively is generated outside windsor and brought in, which by that very nature makes us completely dependent on everything going smoothly all the time outside of our control. By modernizing electricity generation we can ensure not just large corporations are cool on the inside.
More water for the summer
Remember when we were kids and our parents kicked us out in the summer and told us not to come back till dinnertime? It's not just the ipads and phones that makes children today less likely to do that, it's a case of what are they gunna do? I want to make outdoor summer activities a normal thing again and not just an election year tactic. More splash pads at parks, including drinking fountains and washrooms. In a city that deals with too much water there's no reason we can't provide summer cool offs to just 11 parks.
Natural shade
Leaves absorb heat, making leaf shade cooler. Any new trees we plant I want to give the local community the option of having fruit trees as the planted trees. Monopolies on obtaining food only benefits monopoly owners, there's no reason we can't passively create food for the people by just changing the kinds of trees we plant.
Public gardens
Like with fruit trees, public garden patches in public parks, preferably off to the side so the park can still be used, will help foster and develop a culture of providing more for yourself and relying less on uncontrollable outside forces.
Children
The next generation already exists. They're children already developing core memories. If their lived experience is being an indoor iPad kid, odds are that's how their child will be raised. We need to give them something to do, places to go that don't cost money or very little to participate. Kids need to build in person communities, not doomscroll all day every day. I'm not a parent but I'm 'Aunt Dylon' (she was like 4 and I'm not letting her live that down) to someone and I know we can do better for them. There is no one solution to this, and no one person has the answer. Parents, you know what kind of things your kid would like to keep them out of the house, what say you? Bring back the arcade? A sportsball court on that vacant lot on the corner? There is a war for your child's attention and if we don't fight back your children will lose.
